A video shared online shows a bloodied Olawuyi lying unconscious on the floor following the attack.
Other staff of the zoo are heard expressing outrage while insisting the lion would not be spared.
One staff member then pulls a gun and shoots at the lion that attacked Olawuyi.
The lion is seen limping after it is wounded by the gunshot before it falls and dies.
A statement released by the public relations officer of the University, Abiodun Olarewaju, said Olawuyi, until his death was a Veterinary Technologist, who had been in charge of the Zoological garden for over a decade.
