Liz Truss and Rishi Sunak will go head-to-head in the race to become the UK’s next prime minister

In the decisive round of a closely contested race to succeed Boris Johnson as prime minister of the United Kingdom, Liz Truss will take on Rishi Sunak.

After receiving the least support in a fifth round of voting among Conservative members of Parliament, Penny Mordaunt withdrew from the race on Wednesday.

With 137 votes, the former finance minister Sunak kept a commanding lead over Truss, the foreign secretary, who received 113 votes. Mordaunt, the minister of international trade, received 105 votes, placing her last in the runoff. Two votes were tampered with.

Now, Truss and Sunak will face off for the position of Conservative Party leader and prime minister of the United Kingdom.

By September, Conservative Party members will be able to see the results of the final vote.
