Taiwo Liadi wins Nigeria’s 5th 2022 Commonwealth Games Medal

Taiwo Liadi, a 19-year-old Nigerian weightlifter, has earned a silver medal at the ongoing 2022 Commonwealth Games in Birmingham.

Liadi finished second in the women’s 76kg weightlifting event, trailing only Maya Laylor of Canada, who set a new Commonwealth Games record with a lift of 128kg.

Nigeria, which is presently ranked ninth in the medals table, has earned two gold medals and two bronze medals since the games began.

Adijat Olarinoye and Rafiatu Lawal, both weightlifters, won gold in the women’s 55kg and 59kg categories, respectively.

Olarinoye set a new Games record with a lift of 203kg – 92kg in Snatch and 111kg in Clean & Jerk – while Lawal won the women’s event with a total lift of 206kg – 110kg in Snatch and 116kg in Clean & Jerk.
