World Health Organization Celebrates International Day Of Persons with Disability

According to a tweet from the World Health Organization (WHO), disability service providers should:

•Develop & implement service continuity plans incl. for workforce

•Communicate frequently with people with disability & their support networks

•Reduce potential exposure to #COVID19

•Provide sufficient support for people with complex needs

According to the World Health Organization, actions need to be taken to ensure that people with disability can always access the health-care services, water and sanitation services and public health information they require, including during the COVID-19 outbreak.

People with disability may be at greater risk of contracting COVID-19 because of barriers towards implementing basic hygiene measures, such as hand-washing (e.g. hand basins, sinks or water pumps may be physically inaccessible, or a person may have physical difficulty rubbing their hands together thoroughly) as well as barriers to accessing public health information.

Disability is extremely diverse because while some health conditions associated with disability result in poor health and extensive healthcare needs, others do not.

However, all people with disability have the same general healthcare needs as everyone else, and therefore need access to mainstream healthcare services.
