Famous Japanese fashion designer Issey Miyake dies after long battle with ‘Cancer’
Issey Miyake, a pioneering Japanese fashion designer, passed away at the age of 84 after a courageous fight with cancer.
The designer passed away in a Tokyo hospital “surrounded by close friends and associates,” according to a brief statement issued earlier this morning by Miyake Design Group and Issey Miyake Group, which also confirmed the news. As per Miyake’s request, there would be no funeral or memorial service.
Issey Miyake was born in Hiroshima, Japan, in 1938, and is best known for his signature “Pleats Please” line of crease-free pleated separates, geometric “Bao Bao” handbags, and wildly popular fragrances.
He was only seven years old when the atomic bomb fell on the city. He later established his own design studio under his own name in 1970, becoming one of the first Japanese designers to exhibit at Paris Fashion Week and became well-known throughout the world for his ground-breaking garments, textiles, and application of modern technology.
