Photos: Conjoined twins with ‘Fused Brains’ separated through surgery in Brazil

A surgeon from the UK assisted in what may have been the most difficult surgery in history to save the lives of Brazilian twins whose brains were fused at birth.

The three boys underwent more than 33 hours of surgery in just their final two surgeries, requiring close to 100 medical personnel.
They had a total of seven operations after doctors spent months experimenting with different methods in virtual reality before the delicate surgery really started.

Before and after surgery photos show the brothers. They may be seen holding hands and being separated on a hospital bed in one picture.

Dr. Gabriel Mufarrej, director of pediatric surgery at the Instituto Estadual do Cerebro Paulo Niemeyer, worked with Mr. Jeelani to oversee the care.

The twins are the oldest craniopagus twins with merged brains that have been separated, and they are almost four years old.

According to the charity, both twins are making good progress throughout their hospital stay and will get support for six months of rehabilitation.
