Why i benched Cristiano Ronaldo in our final Serie A match – Juventus Boss Pirlo

Juventus boss, Andrea Pirlo, has explained why he benched Cristiano Ronaldo in his side’s Serie A final day 4-1 victory against Bologna on Sunday.

Ronaldo was an unused substitute as Juventus defeated Bologna to qualify for the Champions League ahead of Napoli, who played a 1-1 draw with Verona.

Goals from Federico Chiesa, Adrien Rabiot and Alvaro Morata (2) ensured Pirlo’s men defeated Bologna at Renato Dall’Ara.

But Pirlo is now insisting that he didn’t feature Ronaldo against Bologna because the Portugal captain was tired after playing Juventus’s Coppa Italia final 2-1 win against Atalanta last Wednesday.

“For me, it was important to finish the job, winning the Coppa Italia and qualifying for the Champions League, which was a very important target,” Pirlo said.

“I have always put in the total commitment, and this is the result. Those who must decide about my future will do it.

“I see myself on the Juve bench next season, I would confirm myself, but now we must enjoy what we’ve achieved.”

He added,

“It was a shared decision, Ronaldo was tired after Wednesday’s game, so I decided to start Morata, another great player.

“Ronaldo was available, I’ve a deep squad, and I can pick many different players.
