As individuals rushed on to the platform to assist the author, chaotic scenes were captured on camera within the theater.
Pictures taken on the scene showed him receiving medical assistance from spectators.
He appeared to have been stabbed numerous times, but a witness informed The New York Times that he still had a pulse. On his condition, no formal statement has been made.
The event took place at the Chautauqua Institution, which holds a summer lecture series, about 55 miles southwest of Buffalo in rural New York.
The interviewer had a “minor head injury,” and the suspect was “quickly taken into custody” by a New York state trooper deployed to the scene.
We are dealing with an emergency, a venue representative stated. No additional information is available at this time.
Although the attacker’s intent is yet unknown, Islamists have targeted the author ever since he published The Satanic Verses.
