Breaking: Former Gillingham striker Dave Shearer has died
One of Gillingham’s all-time great strikers has died.
The club has confirmed that Scottish-born forward Dave Shearer died at the age of 63.
Shearer scored 12 league goals in 23 games for the Gills in his debut season, as the club finished fourth in Division 3. That same season, Shearer scored a hat-trick against Colchester United in the FA Cup. He finished the season with a treble in a 5-1 league win over Wigan Athletic.
During his time at the club, he formed an excellent partnership with Tony Cascarino. The 1985/86 season saw Shearer net another nine league goals and the 16 the following year.
Shearer scored five more goals before leaving the club at the start of the 1987/88 season, giving him a total of 42 league goals.
