At the World Athletics Championships in Oregon, Noah Lyles broke the 200-meter record for the United States by dominating the competition.
Michael Johnson’s 26-year-old US record was broken by the slimmest of margins when Lyles ran a 19.32.
To complete a clean sweep on the podium, fellow Americans Kenneth Bednarek and Erriyon Knighton took home the silver and bronze medals, respectively.
The 25-year-old Lyles’ time was the third-fastest in history, trailing only Usain Bolt and Yohan Blake (19.19 and 19.26 respectively).
Lyles and 18-year-old sprint sensation Knighton were expected to face off head-to-head in the race, but the champion easily defeated the competition.
Lyles got off to a quick start before running a remarkable bend and sprinting down the finish line to win with ease.
