IGP: Modern policing is knowledge-driven

Inspector General of Police (IGP) Mohammed Adamu has said modern policing is knowledge-driven and those entrusted with the responsibility must be the best and the brightest.

The police chief said such officers must also be the most dedicated in defending the laws, the citizens and the ideals of the country.

Adamu spoke on Thursday at the graduation of the pioneer course participants at the National Institute of Police Studies (NIPS) in Abuja.

The IGP said Nigerians were yearning for a Police Force that could be trusted to serve and protect them with the highest level of ethics and character.

He also said policing is a profession of high risk and broad challenges, adding that it requires the capacity for quick and informed decision making and excellence in the mission to protect, serve and inspire trust.

Adamu said it is a career that requires exceptional officers who must perform their duties with the highest honour, responsibility, courage and confidence.

The IGP said the idea of establishing a modern befitting National Institute of Police Studies to attain these goals was conceived during the senior police officers’ retreat in Lagos between October 29 and 30, 2019.

The institute was established in November 2019, barely a month after the concept was mooted, he said.

“Our dream is for the Nigeria Police to have an excellent centre for professional studies and strategic leadership learning with a mission to be a catalyst for knowledge and to conduct law enforcement researches that will lead to improved service delivery.”

Police Affairs Minister Mohammed Dingyadi pledged the ministry’s support to sustain the IGP’s efforts at reforming the police.

Also, retired Inspector General of Police (IGP) Tafa Balogun has urged officers and men of the Nigeria Police Force (NPF) to return to their statutory duties after they were displaced from their stations during the EndSARS protests.

In a statement yesterday, Balogun said: “I urge all members of the Nigeria Police in our country to return to their duty posts and continue to provide the much-needed security to our dear country, Nigeria; not minding the recent brutal attacks, arson, and acts of intimidation against the police.

“The Nigeria Police remains the first line of internal security as guaranteed by the Nigerian Constitution. Therefore, it behooves all and sundry not to betray the spirit of the Constitution.

“I sincerely appeal and urge all my brothers and sisters in the police force to put the past behind us as the Federal and state governments, as well as the police authorities, are positively and aggressively addressing the unprecedented provocative attacks on the police institution. We all love you.

“Please, once again, I appeal to all of you to return to duty without further delay.”
