Breaking: Two people injured by sharks in the South Carolina waters off Myrtle Beach
Myrtle Beach – On Thursday, August 18, two people were bitten by sharks in the South Carolina waters off Myrtle Beach.
Karren Sites, a native of Pittsburgh, was swimming in shallow water with her 8-year-old grandson on the first day of a family vacation when a shark approached her and clamped down on her arm.
Sites was attacked by a shark while she was in the hospital, where she underwent surgery and received hundreds of stitches. Her grandson Brian, who was only 10 feet away, witnessed the attack.
The shape of the wound, according to Daniel Abel, a professor of marine science at Coastal Carolina University, “quite definitely” indicated that it was caused by a shark bite.
According to the Myrtle Beach Police Department, just a few blocks away later that same day, another individual was attacked by a shark.
No other information about the incident was available at the time.
Despite the fact that the incident happened shortly after noon, Abel advised that this time of year it’s advisable to avoid swimming at morning or dusk when there are less swimmers and sharks are feeding. Additionally, he issued a warning against swimming when fish schools are close to the coast or fishing piers.
