U.S confronts China, Russia at UN over North Korean missile launches

China and Russia have come under fire from the United States and its allies for allegedly interfering with UN Security Council action against North Korea over its increasing number of ballistic missile tests.

On Friday, the Security Council’s 15 members were unable to come to an agreement on a statement denouncing North Korea’s recent bombardment of ballistic missiles. Instead, a number of nations, including as the US, the UK, and France, separately denounced Pyongyang’s continuous missile testing.

This week, North Korea launched a record number of missiles, including what seems to be an ICBM, increasing the year’s total of missile launches by the country to more than 60.

Linda Thomas-Greenfield, the US ambassador to the UN, claimed that while 13 out of the 15 Security Council members had denounced North Korea’s increasing number of ballistic missile launches since the start of the year, Pyongyang had been shielded by two nations, China and Russia, though she did not specifically name them.

Using North Korea’s formal name, the Democratic People’s Republic of Korea (DPRK), the US envoy claimed that both nations had “bent over backwards” to defend its continuous violations of UN sanctions.
