US rapper Killer Mike was arrested and taken into police custody at the Grammy Awards 2024 on Sunday evening.
The 48-year-old rapper, who is a member of the group Run The Jewels, won three awards at the star-studded ceremony.
Killer Mike, real name Michael Render, scooped best rap album for his sixth studio album Michael, best rap song and best rap performance for his track Scientists and Engineers featuring Andre 3000, Future and Eryn Allen Kane.
However, his moment of glory quickly turned sour as he was placed in handcuffs and escorted out of the Crypto.com Arena by Los Angeles Police Department.
Video footage posted to social media appears to show the music star being detained, as a voice is heard saying: ‘Are you serious? What the f**k?’.
A spokesperson confirmed that the rapper was in the process of being released by the LAPD as of the early hours of Monday morning.
The rep said: ‘On Sunday, February 4, just after 4pm, a male adult was detained and handcuffed for a physical altercation that occurred at the 700 block of Chick Hearn Court.
‘The suspect was placed under arrest and was transported to LAPD Central Division.
‘The suspect has been identified as 48-year-old Michael Render and booked for Misdemeanor Battery 243(A) PC, and is in the process of being released.’
Killer Mike was pictured celebrating his triple Grammy win on the red carpet, posing with his three golden gramophones.
While accepting his first win for best rap song, the lyricist said: ‘For all the people out there that think you get too old to rap – b******t. I don’t care if you’re 78 rapping about how many gals you got in the nursing home.
‘Make sure we keep hip-hop alive.’
After winning best rap performance, Killer Mike told the audience: ‘I wanna thank everyone who dares to believe that art can change the world. Thank Dré, thank Future, thank Eryn, thank all the producers on here, but everyone in this room, it is our responsibility to keep using our imagination to shape and form the world.’
When he was announced as winner of best rap album, he exclaimed: ‘You cannot tell me that you get too old! You can’t tell me it’s too late! It’s a sweep!’
