France President Emmanuel Macron slapped in public

French President, Emmanuel Macron, has been slapped in the face while on an official visit to the South-East of France.

In a video going around on social media, the French President was seen walking up to a barrier on a trip to the Tain-I’Hermitage outside the city of Valence.

A man in a green T-shirt slapped Macron in the face before security operatives quickly moved in. The President was then pulled away.

According to the French media report, two men have been arrested following the incident.

The man was said to have shouted “down with Macron-ism” as he slapped the President, as well as “Montjoie, Saint-Denis” – the battle-cry of the old Kingdom of France, in reference to the banner of King Charlemagne.

In the video, President Macron was seen returning to the barrier briefly after the incident and interacted with the crowd once again.

The identity and motive of the man are still unclear. AFP reported that the local prefecture said the man and another individual were being questioned by the gendarmerie.

Another report said that officers were out in force on the streets of Valence shortly after the President was slapped.
